Grow the classic Kentucky Field Pumpkin, a traditional American heirloom that has been the go-to variety for pies, canning, and livestock feed since the 1800s. These vigorous vines produce large, 15-20 pound pumpkins with flattened, deeply ribbed shape and bright orange color. The thick, sweet flesh makes exceptional pies and the abundant yields make this variety perfect for both culinary use and fall decorations.

Spacing: 2-3 plants per hill, with hills spaced 6-8 feet apart in rows 8-10 feet apart
Sun: Full sun (8+ hours daily)
Plant type: Vigorous vining plants spread 10-15 feet
Zones: 3-10 (warm-season annual)

Harvest & Use

Harvest when pumpkins are fully orange and the rind is hard enough to resist puncture from a fingernail. Cut from the vine leaving 3-4 inches of stem attached. The thick, fine-grained flesh is sweet and smooth with excellent flavor for pies, breads, soups, and purees. Perfect for traditional pumpkin pie, roasted pumpkin, pumpkin butter, and canning. The large size and classic shape also make these ideal for fall decorations and jack-o'-lanterns. Each vine produces 3-5 large pumpkins. Cure pumpkins in a warm, dry location for 10 days, then store in a cool, dry place for 3-6 months.

Care Tips

Kentucky Field Pumpkins thrive in rich, well-drained soil heavily amended with compost. Water consistently and deeply, providing 1-2 inches per week, especially during fruit development. Mulch around plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Side-dress with compost when vines begin to run and again when fruits start to develop. Plant with corn, beans, or radishes for excellent companion planting in the traditional Three Sisters method. Avoid planting near potatoes. Place boards or straw under developing pumpkins to prevent rot and keep them clean.
